What is Open Cinema?
Open Cinema is a film society that screens works by local film and video artists from the Kansas City and Lawrence area. In addition to the local screenings, we also screen 16mm films that are rented from Canyon Cinema. These are experimental and underground films that are difficult to see anywhere else--"...more than 3500 films tracing the history of the experimental and avant-garde filmmaking movement from the 1930s to the present." We do not rent or show films that are available to buy on consumer DVD. Members of Open Cinema nominate and vote on which films are to be rented and screened.
How to become a Member?
Members gain membership by paying $25 once a year. This gives you voting power on what films we rent, and if that's not enticing enough for all of you local filmmakers; members will receive priority on the screening of their work. The memberships are what allow us to be able to rent the (hard to see) 16mm films.
How the Screenings work?
The screenings are free! We do kindly accept donation though. It's first come, first serve. There is now a submission box at the Olive Gallery and Art Supply downtown (15 East 8th St. Lawrence, KS). Fill out a brief submission form and tape it to your VHS or DVD and we will pick it up and put it on our playlist. We are only screening DVD, VHS, and 16mm film now, no more Mini-DV (we had some problems with it at our first screening, plus we don't want wear out our cameras). Keep your stuff under 20 minutes, and only one piece per month. We do not want one person dominating the entire screening.
When?
Screenings are on the last Sunday of every month. The doors open at 2:30pm with live experimental music performed by Aaron Martin. The screenings will wrap up around 5pm.
Where?
Starting in Feb. '06, Open Cinema will take place at the Lawrence Public Library.
