Light From The Underground

Films of April:

Allures - 1964, 8 mins.

A film by Jordan Belson. Correlates geometrically animated patterns with variations in pace and intensity of music to present an example of kinetic art. Consists of sequences featuring interplay of dots, lines, planes, intricate kaleidoscopic designs, circles, grids, rhythms, textures, intensities and variation of focus.

Walking - 1970, 5 mins.

In an abstract visual poem, unaccompanied by narration or dialogue, watercolor sketches and wash drawings of people are animated against an accelerating rock score. The film is unified by the recurring figure of a young boy walking alone; few of the other people that appear briefly are seen again. In the beginning the people are defined individuals, seen in a specific setting and often immobile; by the end of the film the figures are dancing and turning cartwheels, but are mere silhouettes, faceless. No story is explicit; the mood is evocative, lyrical, and suggestive.
